The American Lung Association and Radon Lung Cancer
Beckley, WV is proud to announce the improvements to multi-family homes in the area through increased regulation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The American Lung Association is excited for these efforts taken, and is looking forward to a decrease in radon lung cancer in the Beckley, WV area. This new policy will specifically benefit those renting homes in the Beckley area.
The new policy set in place by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will require that all multi-family homes that are financed through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to have a radon test. Additionally, there is further regulation that any of these multi-family homes returning high levels of gas will be required to have a mitigation system. It is important that the tests are done, as there is no other way to determine whether or not the house has a radon gas, as the gas is both invisible, and odorless.
Effects of Reducing Radon Lung Cancer Through Mitigation
There should be a significant decrease in radon lung cancer, as this gas accounts for approximately 21,000 deaths each year through lung cancer. As the second leading cause of lung cancer, it is important to know that this gas is more dangerous than drunk driving. Radon lung cancer accounts for approximately 15% of all lung cancer cases, making it a big concern for Beckley, WV area residents.
Who benefits most from this is the large percentage of the population that rents from a multi-family home. A multi-family home may or may not be infested with this gas, but it does not make a whole lot of sense for renters to invest in the property that they will not own at the end of the year. This policy from HUD will provide the much needed protection for renters as the threat of radon grows.
The American Lung Association even noted that radon lung cancer is not the only lung ailment that is reduced. Additionally, improved ventilation, and decreased moisture will help improve the safety of homes in the Beckley area. S.W.A.T. Environmental is excited for this as well, as we know we will be able to contribute in various ways to the improvement of air quality, and reduction in number of radon lung cancer cases.
While this action is done specifically by HUD, it comes from a larger movement that HUD is a part of. HUD is part of the Federal Healthy Homes Group which is dedicated to improving home health, and the safety of all homes. The U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development are all part of this group, and are working diligently to improve the safety of all of these homes. S.W.A.T. Environmental commends HUD for their actions, and hopes to see further improvement in hom
